This year, the Mid-Autumn Festival will take place on Friday, 13 September. Also known as the Lantern Festival or Mooncake Festival, the Singapore Mid Autumn Festival is one of the most popular events celebrated by the Singaporean Chinese community.

Many families go out to see the various Chinese lantern displays at night or take a stroll in their local parks. Kids, especially, enjoy the Mid-Autumn Festival because they get to feast on delicious mooncakes while holding soft-lit lanterns shaped like their favourite cartoon characters!

We took the liberty to list down the top 10 Mid-Autumn events to go with your little ones.

This pre-event highlight is created especially for the Mid-Autumn Festival at Gardens by the Bay. The community lantern display features fish painted by beneficiaries from YMCA. Symbolizing good luck, harmony and cheer, this colourful display makes a great backdrop for your Instagram shot!

2. Bicentennial Mid-Autumn Festival 2019 at ChinatownBicentennial

Over at Kreta Ayer, Mid-Autumn Festival and Bicentennial celebrations come together for a month-long extravaganza of high-octane stage performances and cultural activities. Themed "Bicentennial Mid-Autumn Festival 2019" ( 欢庆 开埠两百年 花好月 圆庆 中秋), there is no better place to experience Singapore's Chinese heritage than at the heart of our very own Chinatown.

2.1 Chinatown Mid-Autumn Festival 2019 Official Light-Up and Opening Ceremony

The celebration for Chinatown Mid-Autumn Festival 2019 will kick start with the highly-anticipated Opening Ceremony, which includes the Official Street Light-up, dragon dance performance, as well as an exciting line-up of multicultural song and dance performances by local and overseas troupes from China. Finally, catch the spectacular fireworks displays lined up for the grand finale!

2.2 Street Light-up

Soak in the festivities and celebration of the Mid-Autumn Festival in Chinatown, where traditional Chinese culture comes alive. To commemorate Singapore Bicentennial, the street light-up will depict the story of Singapore in the last 200 years. In addition, be enchanted by the decorations of Chinatown as New Bridge Road, Eu Tong Sen Street, South Bridge Road and the inner streets of Chinatown are adorned with colourful traditional lanterns.

2.3 Heritage + Food Trail

Discover Chinatown's heritage and culture in this walking trail that covers Kreta Ayer Road, Sago Street, Pagoda Street and New Bridge Road. On top of the heritage trail, you get to eat your way through the selected hawker stalls that are mainstays in the local hawker culture.

2.4 Mass Lantern Walk

Immerse yourself in the festive spirit as you join hundreds in this leisurely-paced parade procession under the full moon. While you stroll, feast your eyes on the dazzling displays around Chinatown. Don’t forget the impressive acts of the dragon dance troupes, energetic cheerleaders and the percussion band along the way too!

The lantern walk will conclude with stage performances, pyrotechnics and fireworks display in the heart of Chinatown.

3. Moonfest 2019

Moonfest is an annual traditional Chinese arts festival held at Esplanade in celebration of the Mid-Autumn Festival. Now in its 15th edition, Moonfest presents the opportunity for everyone to be exposed to and rediscover the intrinsic beauty of traditional Chinese arts through an exciting line-up of free programmes and ticketed workshops.

Celebrate the full moon night with NUS Chinese Dance as they present classical Chinese and ethnic dance performances with elegance and gracefulness.

Learn to make your own lantern using materials such as cellophane paper. Parents can bond with their children through this hands-on activity and create their very own traditional Mid-Autumn Festival lanterns. The lessons are conducted in English & Mandarin.

Learn about Chinese shadowy puppetry from the skilled puppeteers of the Taishan Shadow Puppet Art Troupe. Families will discover the rich history behind the art form and make their very own shadow puppet to bring home after the session! The workshops are conducted in Mandarin.

4. Mid-Autumn Festival at Robertson Quay

From lantern walkabout and boat ride* to LED Ariel Kite performances under the night sky, the Singapore River will be bustling with family-friendly activities and energetic performances this Mid-Autumn Festival. It then ends on a high note with not one, but two LED Aerial Kite performances! 

*Lantern walkabout and boat ride are happening only on Saturday, 14 September 2019.

5. Hello Kitty Run Singapore - Moon Walk Edition 2019

In celebration of Mid-Autumn Festival, Hello Kitty will join fans for a 5km night run at The Meadow. Besides the race, you can look forward to traditional games and Instagram-worthy Hello Kitty photo opportunities. Each registered participant is entitled to exclusive LED Hello Kitty lantern, t-shirt and tote bag. Complete the run and you will receive an exclusive Hello Kitty medal too.

The gifting of mooncakes to loved ones is a customary tradition of Mid-Autumn Festival, and the beautiful boxes in which these yummy treats are presented have become almost as important as the mooncakes themselves!

Pick up some paint and crayons and design your very own paper mooncake box in this fun, kid-friendly craft activity.

Produced by local artist and sculptor Lee Yun Qin, “Moonflowers of Mid-Autumn” is a luminescent sustainable art installation featuring glow-in-the-dark flower sculptures crafted from intricate wire mesh and solar-powered LED bulbs.

Learn how to create your own “Moonflower” sculpture in this hands-on session, and pay homage to the ancient Mid-Autumn tradition of lighting lanterns under the full moon!

The line-up includes festival highlights such as the release of giant sky lantern helium balloons as well as a stunning laser light show on the origins of Mid-Autumn Festival. Other performances include an interactive drama performance on the legends of Mid-Autumn Festival, Chinese belly-dancing, live music performances and more.

Did you know that according to a Chinese legend, mooncakes were used to pass secret messages as people would hide small slips of paper into the mooncake? Head down to Chinatown Heritage Centre and try your hands at crafting a mooncake with a hidden message!

Hosted by Houghton & Gough Lifestyles Pte Ltd and Café Melba, FAMFEST is back for another Family Fun Series - this time with the Mid-Autumn Festival Theme.

There will be loads for both parents and kids to revel in. Expect a variety of engaging activities - from arts & crafts sessions to interactive games - that will keep your whole family busy for an entire day. While your kids have fun on the bouncy castle, shop to your heart's content at the amazing flea market. When the pangs of hunger strike, sit back and relax at a table in Café Melba. They will be offering special F&B deals. We suspect mooncakes will be on the menu too.

Through an interactive storytelling session, learn about the mystical story of Hou Yi, Chang'e and the Jade Rabbit. There is also a snow skin mooncake-making class ($3.00 per piece) and a game booth, where you stand to win a mystery prize.

12. Mid-Autumn Virtual Run 2019 (*Bonus)

By Mid-Autumn Festival, you would have consumed many mooncakes. But do you know that a single mooncake contains as many calories as 2 double cheeseburgers combined? That's right! It is that sinful.

Fret not, join the Mid-Autumn Virtual Run to burn off the extra calories. All you need is a GPS-tracking running app (or a treadmill) and you can participate in the 3km, 5km, 10km or 21km marathon. There is no cut-off time which means everyone can complete the race at their own pace.

Submit a screenshot of your tracking app or a photo of the treadmill dashboard showing your result before Sun, 16 Sept, and wait for verification upon submission. Each finisher will receive a Finisher's Medal and Finisher's e-Certificate.

This race is based on the honour system, 42Race will do periodic checks on the submissions. Treat yourself, don’t cheat yourself!
